3rd Annual Cruise-a-Thong - A Race For The Average Joe

Last weekend we went down to check out the 3rd Annual Cruise-a-Thong - A Race For The Average Joe. The paper called it "A grueling and epic race of hilarious proportions" Check out the article in the Pagosa Sun The Cruise-a-Thong is a triathlon designed for the not-quite-hardcore athlete in all of us. The course takes approximately two hours and includes a cruiser bike tour of downtown Pagosa Springs, a thong (flip-flop) walk up the almost world famous Pagosa Springs Riverwalk and a tubing trip back down the San Juan River. The Winner is the participant with the most average time taking into account bonus points for consumption of edibles, the subjective preferences of the judges, gears on the race bike in excess of 1, and any sandals lost during the race.

In an effort to be more gender-inclusive, race organizers have changed the winner’s title from “Average Joe” to “Average Jo.”)

Dave Bellina, in an astounding display of adequacy, won the prestigious and storied Cruise-a-Thong cruiser bicycle (donated by John Dean of Pagosa Outside) for one year.

It looked like so much fun, we are doing it next year. We have several other friends who are going to join us. If anyone else is interested, the official web site is http://www.cruiseathong.com/

Below is a short video of some of the highlights.

O.k. That is hilarious. You don't want to know what I thought when I first read cruise a thong and that you would be participating next year. So, is the goal to come in last with some kind of style?

Suggestions for next year: Someone needs streamers on their bike and/or a crazy horn. Also, Dad should wear one of those hats that you can put a can on each side and drink from it while floating down the river.

I really think Pagosa Springs might be competing for one of the coolest towns in the USA.

I didn't see many Coast Guard approved personal floatation devices (PFD's) on that thar float trip!!!

average time wins. They take the time of 1st place and last place and then divide by two. The closest to the average time wins.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Didn't see any Cost Guard personnel checking ;-)

They must have been using the hot tubs at the Springs

Looks like a great time for all! I like the streamers, crazy horn and beer hat idea for Mikie next year. How about some trainer wheels (not touching the ground of course)

I personally vote for a uni-cycle.  You have plenty of time between now and next year to learn to ride one!
